For those in the wedding industry, Junebug Weddings is a familiar name. Based in Seattle, Junebug was formed in 2006 and is now one of the leading international wedding blogs. With a strong membership of over 1000 (by invite only and carefully selected), Junebug strives to bring a list of quality vendors to couples tying the knot. So we bring to you a special interview with Junebug Weddings to reveal what it takes to be the world’s leading wedding resource, and where Junebug predicts the Wedding industry will be in 10 years’ time.

1. Why Junebug? When was it founded and what got you started on this?

Junebug Weddings was founded by two Seattle wedding photographers back in 2006. Junebug's original purpose was to provide brides in the Seattle area with a quality list of wedding vendors to hire for their wedding day. Over time, Junebug has blossomed into a popular wedding planning resource that not only maintains a quality list of vendors for couples, but is also home to an internationally read blog.

2. Is your membership open to worldwide applications? How many members do you have right now?

Yes, we are an international wedding planning resource. While we are exclusive in that we only promote 10 photographers, florists, etc. in any given region, we do promote professionals from all around the world. We currently boast a membership of over 1,000 vendors worldwide and we're always looking to add up-and-coming talent to our top 10 lists.

3. How do you derive a top 10 list given that there are so many fantastic vendors in the market worldwide?

This is definitely one of the most difficult parts of the job. There are many factors that go into deciding whether or not a vendor meets our membership criteria. We don't just review photos and websites before accepting a member. Reviews, industry connections, the longevity of the business, etc., are all equally important in deciding if a business is a good fit for a top 10 list. We want our vendors to be embedded and completely credible in their market prior to calling them one of the 10 best vendors in their given region.

4. Are the memberships renewable annually?

Yes, our memberships run for 12-months and are renewable at that time.

Catalina Jean ©

5. Where are the majority of your vendors based, most in the US?

As Junebug got its start in the US, we definitely have a larger percentage of vendors listed in the US. However, we do boast large member bases in the UK, Italy, and France.

6. What keeps Junebug awake at night?

We are constantly thinking of ways we can make wedding planning easier and more enjoyable for couples.

Matt Lien ©

7. Can you briefly describe who reads Junebug?

Our readers appreciate artistry and photography. They are couples who are planning a wedding that truly reflects their personality as a couple.

Julie Pepin ©

8. How would you describe a typical day at Junebug?

Lots of emailing, writing, and browsing the web! We also like to kick back with some wine and cheese after a long day. You might say that cheese is Junebug's kryptonite.

9. Where do you see Junebug in 5 years time?

A household name for couples planning their wedding. The Refinery29 of the wedding industry.

Robert J Hill ©

Robert J Hill ©

10. Are there any new or exciting things being planned by Junebug?

We've got some big things in store for the website. We're also attending Way Up North in April and we can't wait to meet tons of people whom we've never met in person before! It's always fun to step out from behind our laptops and get to know these talented artists on a personal level.

BONUS: Where do you see the wedding industry heading in the next 10 years? How would you predict the trend?

More non-traditional weddings, by that I mean more people ditching the white gown, saying I do in a non-standard venue, etc. I think weddings are becoming a space for people who want to express their personalities and really throw unique celebrations of love. I also predict that the wedding industry will boast more diversity.

Then & Now - Jessica Perez

$

0

Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Jessica Perez, and I’m from Central Florida. I’m currently doing crazy things like raising two miniature humans, marriage, and I’m in my 2nd year of nursing school. Before photography, I was doing boring stuff like accounting – no offense to anyone doing it, though it wasn’t for me; apparently I like the struggle.

As for what makes my heart skip a beat; a good ass cup of crafted coffee, a cultured space, and anything typography. I currently shoot with a D750, and my two ‘must-have’ lenses are the 45mm tilt & my 35mm ART.

In 2012, I began Jessica Perez Photography; and in 2015, officially jumped into the world of wedding photography. Before then, I did maternity & newborn lifestyle photography.

Then

Then

How did you learn photography?

I’m a self-taught photographer. With the help of Youtube and coffee, I did a lot of trial and error when it came to photography & my business. Originally, starting in this business I had a ton of insecurities. My first run at a business attempt was an utter fail; I failed at networking, I was too shy to get involved or ask for help, and I felt intimidated by the ‘competition’. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, I was overwhelmed and lost. After I quit, it took me 11 months to pick up my camera again. I’m not sure what made me do it, but once I began photographing again it was like a fire reignited.

Now, I continue to learn everyday. With the help of workshops, tutorials, mentors, social media, & networking. I don’t see ‘competition’ anymore, I see inspiration; only what I strive to attain, not what I’ve failed to become.

Now

Now

When year were your "then" pictures taken?

2014

Then

Then

What did you do to better your photography skills?

Practice, practice, practice.

Though more importantly, I wasn’t truly happy with my images until I found my style. I was constantly struggling with the editing process, finding the ‘right’ models, or believing that I didn’t have the ‘right’ gear.

Until one day I asked a friend who had just had a baby if I could photograph them for my portfolio. That day it had been raining, gloomy, and was severely over-cast… and then I walked into the darkest house I had ever seen. I was like “fuuuuuugde”. All I could think was- I’m doomed, these photos are going to be hideous.

I scouted her home, and after several minutes picked a room in the house with some intimate lighting. It was all over after that day; I fell deeply in love with lights and shadows! But more importantly, it was in that moment that I knew this kind of photography made my heart stop. The intimate, romantic, moody kind! Only then, did I feel like my work got better. After that, I focused more on improving my technique.

Now

Now

What is one piece of advice you would give to a new photographer to help them excel in their craft?

Don’t be afraid to network, reach out for help, or gather constructive criticism. It’s the only way to learn. There are endless resources to help you with your success (including awesome sites like LOOKSLIKEFILM), all you have to do is reach out.

10 Questions: Thierry Joubert

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_thierry_joubert_wedding

Based in Anglet, Southwestern of France, Thierry Joubert shoots weddings worldwide. To Thierry, life is about building real connections with people, be it family or the couples he meets and photographs. Inspired by memories of a nomadic life, Thierry blends childlike openness, and philosophical ideas of trace and sign, with a skill for telling other people’s stories. Unafraid of dreaming big - Thierry’s work showcases his mastery of light and the depth of human emotions.

1. What does making images mean to you?

Telling a story, setting the time, leaving a trace. Wedding photography brings me so much. It's a time of sharing with my couples. A connection.

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_thierry_joubert_wedding

2. What is life to you? What it should be?

For me, life is my family. My wife and my 2 boys. After that, my couples. It's they who allow me to live, to be happy and fulfilled. I don't want much besides that. I prioritise human relationships. I’m open to others, to those who want it. I’m not calculative when it comes to giving my time & energy to others. To exist on this earth and not share with others makes no sense to me. Life is about sharing in my opinion.

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_thierry_joubert_wedding

3. Where did you grow up and how did that play a part in your photography?

I moved 12 times since birth till I turned 18 years old, living in France and abroad because of my father's job. "Travel" certainly opened my mind during my childhood and has inspired me to extend this into my adulthood.

I think part of me remains in the memories of my childhood and being childlike. My logo was inspired by my childhood; it was my wish. A tree that represents life and a kite and a swing reminiscent of carefree childhood. Daring to dream, keeping one's innocence allows one to keep a healthy balance with today’s world.

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_thierry_joubert_wedding

4. There are a lot of professions out there - why be a photographer?

Telling stories always fascinated me. Now I do that with a camera. My "past" is just the opposite of my present. I spent 18 years in the French Army. But also on trips in another state of mind.

Years passed so quickly during my childhood. Memories are only in my mind like "virtual" images. Today, for me photographing people permits me to leave a real sign.

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_thierry_joubert_wedding

5. Are you creativity satisfied at the moment?

I strive for creative satisfaction by focusing first on building a genuine connection with my subjects. So in that way, I am creatively satisfied. :)

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_thierry_joubert_wedding

6. What are you reading now?

"To kill a mockingbird" By Harper LEE.

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_thierry_joubert_wedding

7. Describe your path to what you’re doing now.

My past life was a first life for me. Without this past, without this experience, I wouldn't be who I am today. I would not make the pictures I make, see the world the way I see it. Knowing one’s current self is to understand one’s past. (Getting into your past to see as you as you are today.) Restart my life? I wouldn't change anything.

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_thierry_joubert_wedding

8. Do you make more personal images or are they mainly for other people?

Except wedding commissions, I only take pictures of my family, mostly in film, because I like to have them in my hands and print them and put them on the walls of my family house. It’s like leaving a trace.

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_thierry_joubert_wedding

9. Do you shoot with your left or right eye?

Right. And I shoot with my heart.

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_thierry_joubert_wedding

10. Where do you see yourself in 10 year’s time?

I'm not able to know where I'll be in 2 years... In 10... I still hope I’ll be travelling to document love stories. I hope I’ll be writing a book. And still photographing as I can’t live without that since I always view human relationships as an important aspect in my life.

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_thierry_joubert_wedding

Bonus Q: Do you think the gear you use affects the way you photograph? Why?

I like to say and think that the material must adapt to our mind and never the opposite. Our mind, our desire to create and connect with couples, that I believe is crucial. But for us to artistically express what we are internally we must also prioritise the equipment. I like to say and think what concerns me is that the priority remains our mind, our heart and the hardware. Our cameras are extensions of our minds.

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_thierry_joubert_wedding

Field Notes:

I only work in digital.

In digital, I love deep black and white, which reflects my past, my experiences, something I never want to forget and which I use every day to create.

I keep film for my family pictures, my personal pictures. Rolleiflex, Nikon FM3a, Polaroid... I prefer Black & White rolls rather than color. I found film in 1996. I take pleasure developing  film and paper prints, discovering the magic of the negative, or the appearance of an image in the darkroom... The smell of fixer, touching the sheet, contemplating the image, the work.

Gear List:

  • 35mm 1,4 Nikon
  • 50mm 1,4 Nikon
  • 85mm 1,8 Nikon

Then & Now: Hafenliebe Wedding Photography

$

0

We are Jessy and Björn, working under the name of Hafenliebe Wedding Photography. We're based in Hamburg, Germany and as one can already assume by the name, we document weddings. I, Björn, started out shooting weddings myself about 4 years ago. Jessy, who's a good friend of mine (no, unlike most other wedding photographer couples we're not lovers but friends) joined in the summer of 2013 and in fall of 2013 we decided to be working as Hafenliebe Wedding Photography. Hafenliebe? That’s not an English word, right? It’s not. It’s a mix of two German words. “Hafen”, which means harbour and “Liebe”, which is love. It’s pronounced /ˈhaːfṇliːbə/. It’s our way to pay homage to the city we live in, the way we feel when we’re sitting at the docks, listening to the crashing waves and watching ships pass by for hours. It’s really hard to explain, but you’re invited to hang out with us.

We love to document weddings that are raw and pure and authentic and not some overly posh showoff couples. That's just not us. We share the love for traveling, delicious vegan food and having good times with friends. Besides that Jessy loves books and Björn loves riding around on his fixed gear bike while listening to punk rock.

Then

Then

How did you learn photography?

Both of us learned photography by ourselves. By trial and error, by shooting as much as possible and from networking with other photographers and shooting along with them. Bust mostly it's from shooting a lot and from getting inspired by other photographers and checking what it is that we like about their work and trying to add that to ours.

Now

Now

What year was your "Then" photos taken in?

They were taken in 2013

Then

Then

What did you do to better your photography skills?

Just by shooting as much as possible. Photography is like playing music, you wouldn't get any better in playing your instrument if you only play it once a week for a paid concert. If you really love what you do, you want to do it as often and as much as possible. If you're not totally free of talent, you just can't help but getting better and better at it that way. Besides that we get inspired by other photographers, get critiqued by fellow photographers and as I said before shoot, shoot shoot. Also just by looking at other photographers from all sorts of photography you can get inspiration, you just have to be careful not to copy what you see, but to find out what it is that you like about an image and try to incorporate it in your own shooting style.

Now

Now

What is one piece of advice you would give to a new photographer to help them excel in their craft?

As before, shoot as much as possible, look at photography, talk about photography, read about it, but mostly shoot, shoot, shoot. We found that also networking with other photographers can get you inspired, but the important thing is to not be just networking for the sake of networking, you should be really interested in the other person as well. Too often this exchange remains one-sided and so for one person it's not so much of worth to be staying in touch with you.

We think it's also important to shoot for yourself and not just for your client so you can find your own voice and with time the perfect clients for you will cross your way and you will shoot for yourself, but get paid by them.

Then

Then

What gear do you use?

We're Canon shooters. Working with Canon 5D Mark II's & III's. We like to work with very little gear as both of us are not techy. At weddings you'll mostly find us shooting at 24mm, 35mm and 85mm. Flash when needed, mostly during dancing at night. We're working on Mac's with Lightroom and ASE. Over time we developed our own preset which once started with Portra 800 and Tri-X from VSCO Film Pack 01.

10 Questions: Jessica Tremp

$
0

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_jessica_tremp_photographer_fine_art

Melbourne based Australian photographer Jessica Tremp shoots Weddings to pay her bills whilst also being an accomplished fine art photographer. With no formal training in photography, Jessica made an impressive journey from being a full-time dance student to photographer with many gallery representations internationally under her belt. Her work is also widely published in photography art journals. Haunting, poetic and mesmerising - with a strong artistic narration and fluid energy - Jessica’s painterly work draws you in, hungry for clues; wanting more.

Editor's Note: Some of the images in this post contains nudity.

1. What does making images mean to you?

It's a way for me to explain something I can't find the right words for.

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_jessica_tremp_photographer_fine_art

2. What is life to you? What it should be?

Some days I get lost thinking about the suffering in some parts of the world or some people's lives, or a feeling of impending doom of the apocalyptic type. Some days I just get lost in dirty laundry. Life to me is finding beauty in the imperfect and contentment in even the crazy moments of life. It's trying to live simpler every year with quality over quantity at all fronts, including food, relationships, material posessions, etc. Trying to leave a small footprint environmentally and a big positive mark on someone else's life, whether that's a child, stranger, someone you love close to you or people struggling on the other side of the planet.

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_jessica_tremp_photographer_fine_art

3. How does where you live influence your creativity?

Being slightly removed from the city means I can breathe just that little bit easier. I can see myself, my work, family and friendships a tiny bit more objectively without feeling completely boxed in. I've always been drawn to nature ever since I was a little girl and being surrounded by it, reminds me it's still there, just breathing away by my side. It's a wonderful companion.

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_jessica_tremp_photographer_fine_art

4. There are a lot of professions out there - why be a photographer?

I never truly decided to make photography my profession. I photographed for the heart. Over time jobs just kept creeping in and one day I had to realize that I'd gradually built up to full time work. I work for myself, shooting weddings under the name Brown Paper Parcel in the warmer months and trying to carve time for my own fine art work when the cooler seasons roll around.

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_jessica_tremp_photographer_fine_art

5. Are you creativity satisfied at the moment?

No, not entirely. Having two little children under school age and a full time job means I very rarely have the time or energy to create. I'm using this time to build a cache of ideas, fleshing them out on walks and drives, ready to (hopefully) turn into realities when life permits. I sometimes also find photography a tough medium. It's so heavily oversaturated. I do a little bit of pottery on the side and working with my hands really appeals to me a lot.

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_jessica_tremp_photographer_fine_art

6. What music are you listening to?

I love listening to my husband Michael flesh out a song he's writing on his guitar or practising with band members in the living room the most. Otherwise, we tend to listen to older music at home Sibylle Baier for when I’m feeling romantic The Velvet Underground, The Brian Jonestown Massacre very loud on a roadtrip or after a few whiskeys much too late in the night Syd Barrett and Skip Spence when I’m feeling clever and plotting plans The Kinks on jumpy itchy vinyl with friends around Jason Molina, Big Star, Elliott Smith or Neil Young to soothe a touchy heart Billie Holiday, ol' Blue Eyes Sinatra or Hawaiian records while I'm cooking a feast for family or friends There's also plenty of room in my days for Jonathan Richman, Kurt Vile and Sharon Van Etten.

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_jessica_tremp_photographer

7. Describe your path to what you’re doing now.

I've always needed a creative outlet. When I was younger, this could be hours and hours locked away in my room with my pencils and fresh pads of drawing paper. I’ve studied dancing full-time, written songs, though I generally only sing in private and wish I could paint better. Photography is the single one medium that has been by my side the most consistently. It just linked arms with me one day and hasn’t let go. Through years of dabbling and no formal training, I began to grow into my style more and more. I never set out to make a living off it. That was something that gradually just occurred after I landed a few lucky shows at galleries and people asking me to shoot weddings and editorials. Now I’m incredibly lucky to call it my full time job. I make a clear separation between work and personal photography. This gives me the freedom to shoot entirely for myself when I’m working on something personally without needing or wanting to impress anyone. It does also feel different behind the lens. At a wedding, I enjoy being the fly on the wall and employing a photojournalistic approach to the way I shoot. It’s very reactive and I need to think quickly, instinctively and be swift on my toes. For my personal work, I can mull over an idea a little longer. I’d like to say both aspects of photography are always nurtured, though quite often lately with my own work it feels like time and inspiration pass each other like two ships in the night. It’s hard to have both at the same time.

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_jessica_tremp_photographer

8. Have you had any mentors along the way?

Not really, no. I have a few like minded friends and over the years we have helped each other develop our practises, both in business and personal work, bounced ideas off of each other and supported one another whenever we could.

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_jessica_tremp_photographer

9. Do you shoot with your left or right eye?

Left.

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_jessica_tremp_photographer

10. Where do you see yourself in 10 year’s time?

The only thing I'd truly change about where I am right now is a little bit more of a 'life/work' balance. I'd love to have more time on my hands to read, create, sit in a bathtub and ponder about life. Enjoy my kids. That kind of thing. Otherwise I'm really quite happy with where I'm at right now.

looks_like_film_10Q_interview_jessica_tremp_photographer

Bonus Q: Do you think the gear you use affects the way you photograph? Why?

I have to be honest, I'm probably one of the least gadgety people. I don't really like talking about it much either. I think you can create really beautiful work with almost any tool. I feel like it's asking the chef what oven he uses. I'd much rather hear about his ingredients and what he'd cook himself after a long, hard day. But I own and shoot on Canon SLR's, prime lenses, iphone, Hasselblad, 80's plastic film camera.

Field Notes:

I wish I shot more analog and I would love to do more of it in the future, however as I’m a very impatient person, digital is usually what I fall back on.
