The composition, the angle, the energy, the light, the narrative, beautiful tonal control (while retaining great details in highlights & shadows) - I love how the author of this image captured this street scene - a guy selling newspaper to paserby in the alley. - Julianna Koh Blackwell

Several weeks back, our friend and colleague Mircea Branda had us scraping our collective jaws off the pavement with these gorgeous images. So, yeah, we had to learn more about how he crafts these rich and intimate wedding portraits. Check ‘em out, guys!
Mircea. You. GO!
Hi there. I am a photographer from Romania. More recently I've been shooting weddings, but it all started as a hobby seven years ago when I bought my first camera. For a long time my artistic focus was macro and street photography. Then, a good friend of mine and a great photographer as well, Lucian Borza, asked me to join him and shoot a wedding together. That is how it all started.
By what artists/creatives are you influenced? What inspires you?
I'm inspired by the work of some great wedding photographers such as: Ed Peers, Jonas Peterson, Dylan Howell & Sarah Byrne, Gabe Mcclintock, Gianluca Adovasio and many others. Also, the fact that I did macro and street photography for many years has trained my eye to focus on the little details that matter.
Do you have a vision in mind before going out and shooting? Tell us about about your workflow and how the vision comes to life before shooting and in post.
Before a photo session, I like to meet with my clients first and find out a little bit about them. What are their interests or passions? I also observe them as a couple. Are they adventurous or reserved? These bits of information can really set the mood to a session and even inspire a location. Then during the session my main concern is to keep it all natural. The first thing I tell my clients before a wedding is to try to forget that I am even there.
I like to keep my workflow as simple as I can. At a wedding I shoot somewhere around 3,000 photos. The first step, which I consider most difficult, is selecting the photos that I give to my clients. Then I import all my photos to Lightroom, choose an action and start working.
Now tell us how this amazing image came together, from conception to completion.
I had this location in mind after finding out that the groom is an architect and that the couple also loves nature, just like me. The place itself is a complex of traditional houses in a village near my hometown. We woke up very early in the morning and started shooting. Long after the sun rose, as we were heading back, I accidentally saw this wonderful place behind a hill where the sun hadn’t shown up yet. That is where I took this photo. Back home, I selected Kodak Gold 200 and started to get to work.
Bonus Eye Candy!

I can´t really describe why I like this shot. I love the glowing highlights and how tiny the little human in the middle seems to be in between these huge trees. It´s just so magical. If it would be my photo I would print it as big as possible! Really awesome image!! - Sven Malojlo

I love the vibe of this. Using the double exposure in this with the two different poises makes this image very sexy and mysterious. It make the viewer want to see more. - Ari Dorfman
I love the feel of this photo by Daniel Wesley. The colour, the light, the jacket, the stance give it a really cool vibe. - Chris Parkinson

This reminds me of a fashion photo from the 60s. The expression and posture is lovely. The lines of the windows add an interesting element to the photo. Love everything about this one. - Jacob Loafman
I love the soft simple lighting and the story it tells. Apparently taken in her apartment, you see her keyboard and the murphy bed against the wall acting as a solid background which I think just everything together tells a fantastic story. Like a biographical statement of what's happening in her life at this point. Great photo. - Jarrett Hucks
Samantha Overway-VanderMolen - Kodak Gold 100
I just love this image so much, for one thing, I think she is right, new moms do feel a little out of focus. For another, I was present for the birth of this little Raven girl and it was the most magical thing ever so I feel a connection with this image in a way others probably don't. Plus the light is magical and I think as artists we all think to much about photographs being classically 'good' when there is so much amazing stuff going on in even the most out of focus images. - Rachel Kaye

10 Questions: The Eagle Hunters with Sasha Leahovcenco
This weeks Then & Now is with our very own Jacob Loafman. If you don't know, Jacob has been with us since nearly day one and is the main Choo Choo'er in the Facebook Groups. He also happens to be a kick ass dude, will do anything for anyone, is an amazing photographer and artist and is very humble. Check out what advice he has to give and don't forget to tell him to SHUT UP in the comments, or here.
I am Jacob Loafman, a photographer and train conductor based out of Saint Louis, Missouri, USA. I photograph weddings, families, and portraits primarily. My passion is my personal work, which could be just about anything. I have just started taking a journey into my mind to find those strange, beautiful, crazy, and maybe even simple thoughts, and figuring out how to properly portray those through photographs. This is my biggest challenge I've given myself so far as a photographer and I'm very excited about it all.
My favorite music is instrumental rock, such as This Will Destroy You, Sigur Ros, Explosions In The Sky, Red Sparrows, Russian Circles and anything in that realm.
Personally, I have great eyelashes and a rockin' ass. Just kidding, my eyelashes are just okay, I guess. In all honesty, I'm a pretty normal guy. While I'm active on social media, in the real world I'm a simple goofy guy that enjoys creating photographs, fishing, playing a round of golf, hanging out with my dog watching documentaries, and going out with my friends every now and again.
How did you learn photography?
Well I started back in high school in the darkroom with film, probably like lots of others. Then life just kind of happened and I didn't really get back into it until late 2012. I began looking up tutorials via YouTube, articles, blog posts, anything I could find honestly. So, Im about 90% self taught I would say. The other 10% was the high school knowledge I gained in 2000 - 2001.
What year was the "Then" picture taken in?
What did you do to better your photography skills?
I just constantly had a camera with me. I would, and still am, always, ALWAYS shooting something at least 6 days per week. Even when I get into a rut, I continue to shoot. I'm a hands-on type of learner, so this is the best way for me to grow.
What is one piece of advice you would give to a new photographer to help them excel in their craft?
I would advise them to focus on themselves and their vision. The best person to help you excel is yourself. I believe this is accomplished by challenging yourself, taking risks, and not being afraid to make mistakes. So, simply put, focus on your own work and just go shoot. That's what has worked best for me.
